PSP2: Sony’s Next Generation Portable code named NGP
Sony unveiled its next generation portable “NGP” (aka PSP2) in Tokyo
This will be my first look at Sony’s new PSP or code name Next Generation Portable. This is the latest, soon to be, offering from Sony, although Sony did release the PSP GO, it really didn’t have the changes we were looking for. We finally have something in the new PSP that has really brought some considerable changes to the device. Sony has finally come clean with the new PSP portable and from what it looks like it will revolve around 5 key concepts:
- New and exciting user interface
- Social network connectivity
- Location based chat and entertainment
- Converging real
- Virtual augmented reality
The Next Generation Portable will also be backwards compatible with Sony PSP downloadable games only, for those of you that are interested (everyone). The Next Generation Portable will sport a 5″ inch ‘Organic Light Emitting Display’ for the front display. The NGP will also be using a high performance CPU-GPU that is combined with the OLED that will enable ultra rich graphics. The processor will be the Quad-Core ARM Cortex A9, this will allow for those silky smooth graphics.

The Next Generation Portable will include a few other features that hard core gamers will love in this edition, such as the multi-touch back pad that offers more control over the game as well as navigation when using the social networking feature. You also get to use the new twin analog joy sticks that are very different in touch and feel than the nubs on the PSP. Of course you will be connected via 3G data plan, but Blutooth and WiFi will be available as well. This unit is GPS ready (nowadays what unit isn’t).
With the Accelerometer and Gyroscope motion sensing, this will be a lot more helpful with those games that require motion control. The digital camera feature is mounted in the front and back of the Next Generation Portable giving you easy picture snapping capabilities. There will be no more plugging games in to play, everything will be bought and downloaded from the Android market place or the Sony PSP store.
The Next Generation Portable console UI is called ‘LiveArea’ which are a few vertically navigated home screens that also include social networking through Sony’s social network. With the new Next Generation Portable features, you’ll be able to jump between games and LiveArea without losing your progress in a game. This is also used for PlayStation news, information, and accomplishments of all types, and real-time chat. If you are looking for gamers that are nearby there is also an app called “Near” that will find those people for multiplayer action.

PSP2: Sony’s Next Generation Portable
I am really excited about the new PSP (gosh, so many names) because this looks like something completely new and not what we have become used to. What I have seen of the Next Generation Portable, it really doesn’t look like anything I’ve ever seen before, and that’s promising in itself. The Next Generation Portable release date has been leaked, and from what we can tell, Jan 2012 is when we should expect to see the first public version so stay tuned.
