Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light Hits iPhone & iPad With Co-op

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is the first ever co-op action/adventure game featuring Lara Croft. This brand extension incorporates the hallmarks of the Tomb Raider franchise including exploration, discovery, platforming, and puzzle solving. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light allows players to experience Lara Croft from an isometric viewpoint, and combines new gameplay features such as character progression, fun fast-paced combat, and elements of cooperation and competition.

The iOS version is the same as the PC, PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade versions, minus the DLC. Lara Croft finds an ancient mirror that is being used to imprison an evil being known as Xolotl, and she’s not the only one looking for it. The local warlord has followed her and unleashed the power of Xolotl, who wants to destroy the world. You play either solo, as Lara Croft, or you can team up in co-op with a friend taking the role of the guardian of light, Totec.

Granted: if I want to sit down and game, I’m most likely going to fire up my xbox 360 or PS3 and kick JAG’s ass – or maybe it’s the other way around… But if I’m out and about and especially overseas, well I am left with playing on my iPhone or my laptop.

JAG and I are big fans of co-op games but when it comes to the iPhone, except for a few games like Words with Friends or Scrabble and Eliminate, there are not many truly co-op games.

So I think the biggest selling point for Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is the co-op gameplay that gives each player a specific tool-set that needs to be executed in harmony to get past the game’s various challenges. When JAG & I first started playing Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, we had to figure out how it worked and my biggest challenge as always on the iPhone is the controls because I have long nails.

The disadvantage in a co-op game would be not being able to communicate with your partner. JAG thinks it is fun to lose me in the game until he is about to die and I hear him scream in my headphones: Pris, where the h*** are you? I need help right now! lol At first, we kept going in and out of the game to chat through IMs about strategies and our next moves. Until we realized voice chat was possible though the game. We are both playing while being in different States and our voices are very clear. JAG plays on his iPad and even though he could hear me well, he had no audio sound.

The iPhone/iPad version of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light doesn’t look as good as the consoles’ version of course but visual and audio gripes aside, this is still an excellent version of an excellent game.

At $6.99 for the iPhone and $9.99 for the iPad, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is available through the App Store.
