Halo Reach, developed exclusively for Xbox 360, is theblockbuster prequel to the landmark Halo video game franchise and is the biggest game yet in the Halo series. Halo is one of the biggest video game series in history, and is the top selling franchise on Xbox. It has defined a generation of gamers and changed how people view video games.
Halo Reach tells the tragic and heroic story of Noble Team, a group of Spartans, who through great sacrifice and courage saved countless lives in the face of impossible odds. The planet Reach is humanity’s last line of defense between the encroaching Covenant and their ultimate goal, the destruction of Earth. If it falls, humanity will be perched on the brink of destruction.
The Halo series evolved with each release, keeping fans of the series on their toes with a number of subtle tweaks that changed game play slightly. However, Bungie’s last hurray is complete with a much needed face lift and new styles of play, while still retaining that good ol’ Halo feel.
One of the first things you will notice about Halo Reach are the graphics. The engine has been redone and your perpetual enemy, the Covenant, has never looked threatening as they do now. This prequel takes place on the planet Reach and not on Halo or Earth, and as such the landscape and scenery is a totally new feel that harks back to the exploration days of Halo: Combat Evolved.
The first mission in Halo Reach sets the tone of the game perfectly, leaving you and your team of Spartans (Noble team) to seek out a distress signal. The scene is splattered with blood, and a few reluctantly recognized traces of plasma fire. As the tension grows you encounter a group of civilians taking shelter, panicked, and speaking quickly in their native tongue. This isn’t Kansas anymore.
Halo Reach successfully pulls off one of the best campaigns in Halo history. But what about the matchmaking? This is Halo’s bread and butter, the aspect of the game that will keep players coming back months and years after the fall of Reach. This, too, has seen a major makeover. Bungie has taken a cue from their competitor, Call of Duty, and introduced a similar system of “perks”, called load outs. Your load out can consist of the ability to sprint, jet pack, armor lock, camouflage yourself, and use a hologram. These add an entirely new experience to the multiplayer aspect of Reach, and make for some very heated battles.
Bungie threw everything they had into making Halo Reach the definitive Halo. Whether you are a seasoned vet, or a newcomer to the series, Halo Reach will be an all new experience that begs to be played over and over.
